Eleventh Sunday of Pentecost

By Elijah's Head Was Some Baked Bread

1 Kings 19: 4 - 8

Even though Elijah had won the contest with the prophets of Baal, the pagan Phoenician god of Jezebel, Elijah was still afraid for his own life.

He ran away from the court of King Ahab in fear, even though he had done exactly what God had asked him to do. God responded to Elijah's faithfulness by sending his own messenger, an angel.

Having left the court of Ahab in the hill city of Samaria, Elijah went to Beersheba in Judah, and then walked further into the desert. Ultimately,he walked to Mount Sinai.

Like Elijah, we, too, draw strength for the journey from the bread of Holy Communion.
