Sunday of the Passion

Peter Hears a Rooster Crow

Luke 22: 54 - 62

Matthew 25: 69 - 75

Mark 14: 66 -72

John 18: 15 - 18, 25 - 27

Peter was a man of changeable temperament and many enthusiasms. Even though it was his strong declaration of faith (Matthew 16: 13 - 20) that Jesus responded to by saying, "Upon this rock I will build my church," after the Passover supper on the evening of Holy Thursday, Peter denied his being a follower of Jesus three times before the sun rose on the morning of Good Friday.

1. Was Peter with Jesus when he was arrested?

[Peter followed behind Jesus.]

2. Why did the people think Peter knew Jesus?

[The people thought they had seen them together, and they knew from Peter's accent that he was from Galilee, in the north, where many of Jesus' disciples came from.]

3. How many times did Peter say he did not know Jesus?

[Peter said he did not know Jesus three times.]

4. What did Peter do when he realized what he had done?

[He went away from the group and wept bitterly.]
