The Fourth Sunday in Advent

Gabriel Brings Blessings to Mary
Luke 1: 26 - 38

Just as John the Baptist came to make a path for Jesus in the world, John's mother, Elizabeth, made a path for Mary, the mother of Jesus, to follow.

The archangel Gabriel, who brought God's good news to Mary, is one of God's angels, or messengers.

When Gabriel told Mary she was to be the mother of Jesus, she replied simply. But when she met her cousin Elizabeth, Mary told Elizabeth the good news in the form of a beautiful prayer, which we call the Magnificat.

1. Where did Mary live when the angel Gabriel came to her?

[Mary was living in Nazareth, in Galilee, in the northern part of Palestine.]

2. Who was Mary engaged (or betrothed or promised) to?

[Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph, who was a descendent of King David.]

3. What did Gabriel tell Mary to name the baby?

[Gabriel told Mary to name the baby Jesus.]

4. What did Mary tell the angel?

[Mary said, "I am the Lord's servant. Let it be as you have said."]
