Fifth Sunday of Pentecost

Herod Beheads John the Baptist

Mark 6: 14 - 29

John the Baptist made a deep impression on the Jews of Palestine, and even Herod Antipas, who ordered John's execution, was shaken by his death.

According to Luke, John and Jesus were members of the same extended family. Jesus, too, was shaken by John's execution, and withdrew from his disciples and followers to mourn in private.
