Sunday of the Passion

Jesus Prays in the Garden

Mark 14: 32- 42

Matthew 26: 36 - 46

Luke 22: 39 - 46

Again and again throughout his lifetime, we see Jesus withdraw from his friends and disciples to refresh himself in prayer.

But never do we see him pray in such agony as he does this night after the Feast of the Passover, when he is certain of the pain, suffering and humiliation that will precede his crucifixion and death on the next day.

The Garden of Gethsemane is a beautiful, old walled garden in Jerusalem, east of the Mount of Olives.

Please read the passage in Luke for his insight into the disciples' state of mind.

1. Who did Jesus take with him to Gethsemane?

[Jesus took the disciples Peter, James, and John with him to Gethsemane.]

2. How did Jesus say that he felt?

[Jesus said, "I am so sad that I feel as if I am dying."]

3. What did Jesus pray for?

[Jesus asked God the Father to keep him from suffering.]

4. What did the disciples do while Jesus prayed?

[The disciples fell asleep while Jesus prayed.]

5. How many times did the disciples fall asleep?

[The disciples fell asleep three times.]
