The Second Sunday of Epiphany

God Calls Samuel by His Name
1 Samuel 3: 1 - 10

Samuel was the son of Hannah and Elkanah.

Hannah was the first ordinary woman in the Bible to pray to God, and her beautiful song of praise in 1 Samuel 2 may be the forerunner of Mary's Magnificat.

Hannah's bravery in the face of God and the priests was rewarded with a loyal and faithful son who was chosen for the priesthood from birth. Samuel grew up to be the priest who anointed King David.

Samuel's response to the Lord in verse 10 is a wonderful memory verse, even for the very young.

Today is a good day to sing LBW 250, Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty, especially the fifth verse.

1. Where did Samuel live?

[Samuel lived in the temple in Shiloh.]

2. What did Samuel do there?

[Samuel served Eli, the high priest.]

3. Who did Samuel think was calling his name in the night?

[Samuel thought Eli was calling him.]

4. How many times did the Lord call Samuel's name?

[The Lord called Samuel three times.]

5. What did Eli tell Samuel to reply?

[Eli told Samuel to say, "I'm listening. What do you want me to do?" (In the King James Version, Samuel says, "Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth.")]
